BRIAN RAY is The Gazette’s Iowa City Chief Photographer working out of The Gazette office in the Old Capitol Town Center in Iowa City. He started his photography career in high school working for Davenport Central’s Blackhawk newspaper. After graduation he attended the University of Iowa where he double majored in journalism and psychology while working as a photographer and photo editor for the Daily Iowan. In 2000 Brian started the first of his two internships with The Gazette before being hired as a staff photographer in Cedar Rapids. Brian was then promoted to the post in Iowa City in 2004.

LIZ MARTIN is the newest staff photographer at The Gazette. After a decade-long obsession with art, she put down the paint brushes and pencils and picked up her mom’s vintage Nikon while in high school and has had a camera in hand nearly every day since, documenting the lives of friends and strangers. An internship at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram during high school led her to pursue a degree at the University of Missouri in photojournalism, with a minor in sociology. After graduating in 2006, Liz interned at The Gazette, the Yakima Herald-Republic in Washington and the Deseret Morning News in Salt Lake City before returning to The Gazette full-time in December 2007. CLIFF JETTE has been a staff photographer at The Gazette since the summer of 2003. Before then he attended graduate school at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communications. He has worked as a freelance photojournalist in Columbus, Ohio, worked as chief photographer at The Sidney Daily News in Sidney, Ohio and completed and internship at The Seattle Times. He also holds a BFA in studio art from the University of Arizona. Cliff’s Gallery

JIM SLOSIAREK is originally from Wisconsin, and has been with The Gazette since the summer of 2000. While still in college at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he started his photojournalism career in 1992 at Community Newspapers Inc., a chain of weekly newspapers in suburban Milwaukee. Jim’s first daily newspaper position was with the Waukesha Freeman, west of Milwaukee. Before coming to the Hawkeye State, he worked as a staff photographer at The Journal Times in Racine, Wis., where he met his wife, Angie. They live in Cedar Rapids with their daughter. Jim’s Gallery

ROLLIN BANDEROB is the photo editor at The Gazette. His photography education started as a 4-H project when he was 10. After high school he worked on weekends at the Manteca Bulletin, a small daily in central California. While at Calif. State University, Fresno he worked at papers on and off campus until graduation. He also had internships at The Modesto Bee and The Pueblo Chieftan during the summers. His first full-time staff position was at the Redding, Calif. paper, where he later became the photo editor. He joined The Gazette in 1998 as assistant photo editor.

Suburban girl at the county fair

Posted on Jul 13, 2009 by Liz Martin.

I'll admit it: I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to all things farm-related. Sure, my uncle raised longhorn cattle (I remember feeding one by hand, Uncle Bugs, who I presume was named because he wasn't destined for the auction/butcher's block) and had a room full of rodeo prizes. Visits to that farm when I was living in Oklahoma in elementary school are a fond memory -- if I'm guessing ages right, I was less than four years old the ...

Friday night at Hawkeye Downs

Posted on Jul 10, 2009 by Liz Martin.

I spent last Friday out at Hawkeye Downs covering the Miller 100 race. Photographers are at a bit of a disadvantage when covering a single long race out there.. once the race starts, you're stuck in whatever position you've chosen. The view may be better from inside the track, but there's no tunnel under the track, so you're stuck there once the race starts. (Above: post-race rehydration by the winner, Steve Carlson) I opted for covering the race from outside the ...

Photographing Fireworks

Posted on Jun 30, 2009 by Brian Ray.

With the Fourth of July Holiday rapidly approaching we thought it would be good to provide  a quick tutorial on how to photograph your local fireworks display. The most important piece of equipment you will need to bring with you besides your camera is a tripod. The tripod is necessary because long slow shutter speeds must be used to effectively photograph the movement of the fireworks through the sky. With out a tripod not only will the movement of the fireworks ...

Trekfest

Posted on Jun 27, 2009 by Cliff Jette.

Here's a couple images from Trekfest in Riverside, which is always a really fun event to cover. Additional photos at gazetteonline.com.-Cliff Actors from the original Star Trek series George Takei, Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig laugh as a costume contest participant collapses on the ground, portraying one of the innumerable, anonymous red-shirted crew members who often didn't survive the original crew's adventures.  Gary Barclay of Anderson, IN, dressed as Spock, performs for the judges during the Federation category in the costume contest ...

HUD visit / how to not cover a press conference

Posted on Jun 16, 2009 by Liz Martin.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan visited Cedar Rapids last week, and I followed him and his entourage of local/state dignitaries through the day as they toured Time Check, downtown Cedar Rapids and Veterans Memorial Building, and ended the day with a press conference.  Going into the day, I knew we'd only have room for one or two photos, and that the press conference is really just my last chance / just-in-case to get something ...

'It always rains for Fun Days'

Posted on Jun 12, 2009 by Liz Martin.

.. or, so said a fellow journalist as I prepared to cover the North Liberty Fun Days parade. I had already been to the carnival, which was understandably quiet due to the late afternoon rain showers that started up about 30 minutes before the festival's start. Typically "cute kid photos" aren't what I look for when I go into an event. (Yes, everyone loves cute kid photos, but, it can get boring after awhile, and we do strive for diversity of ...

Tennis novice

Posted on Jun 11, 2009 by Liz Martin.

Somehow, in my ten years as a photographer (two of those at the Gazette) I have never photographed tennis.  So when I was assigned to shoot the girls state tennis team tournament, I walked in a bit nervous and completely clueless about scoring and how the game is played, aside from "hit the ball over the net."  Luckily, there were plenty of coaches and parents around who were more than willing to explain it all to me, and I left ...

Gert and Geneva Tower

Posted on Jun 09, 2009 by Liz Martin.

Photos of relatives, including 33 great grandchildren, fill the wall of Gert Steele's Geneva Tower apartment in downtown Cedar Rapids on Thursday, May 28, 2009. Steele has lived in same unit in the building for almost 31 years and, at 97, is the oldest resident of the building. "This place saved my life," Steele said of the support she received after her husband passed away shortly after they moved into the building. Dave Rasdal and I spent a couple hours at ...

Signs of the Flood

Posted on Jun 08, 2009 by Jim Slosiarek.

I shot this photo of Linda Seger hugging Nick Duffy, one of her many grandchildren, after a birthday celebration in Seger's rebuilt Time Check neighborhood home for a flood anniversary special section published by The Gazette. Meredith, one of our reporters, actually gave me a heads-up on a handwritten sign in Seger's home marking the water level. As the one-year anniversary of the 2008 flood draws near, it got me thinking about how people chose to "commemorate" the height of ...

Sheriff's office tour

Posted on May 15, 2009 by Liz Martin.

"Tour the Linn County Sheriff's Office before rebuilding starts" is not the most exciting photo assignment. But it's a challenge. Light is scarce (thus the grain), but I can usually count on TV photographers popping some light in there so I don't have to use a flash. Sheriff Gardner milled about this spot just long enough that I was able to get a decent, somewhat sharp, frame. The demolition line you see on the drywall is about 11 ft above ...

Getting their hands dirty

Posted on May 11, 2009 by Liz Martin.

Last week I photographed a tree planting day in Marion. About 100 trees were planted in the wetlands area of the park by AmeriCorps volunteers, Linn County Conservation Department workers and other volunteers, following a presentation kicking off this year's National County Government Week with a theme of "Greening Our Future".  Linn County Supervisors helped plant a few trees, but weren't really dressed for landscaping... Linn County Supervisor Linda Langston, right, holds a tree while Conservation Department of Linn County Deputy ...

Rain Delay Photographer

Posted on May 09, 2009 by Jim Slosiarek.

This week I found myself confronted with two rain delays. Rain delayed the start of the Simpson College v. Coe College baseball game during the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.     Severe weather interrupted a girls Mississippi Valley Conference track meet at Xavier High School.     Just because rain starts falling or lightning starts lighting up the sky doesn't mean you stop looking for photographs. Much of the desire to keep making pictures even when the weather ...

Postville, one year later

I covered the immigration raid at Agriprocessors a year ago, so it was only appropriate that I return this month for the 'year after' story.  You can read my post from last May here. Jim Slosiarek covered the day after, and former intern Courtney Sargent went out four days after the raid. Orlan Love's story and my slideshow will publish Sunday, but for now, here's a preview... is up on gazetteonline here. The continuing economic impact is a major concern for ...

Attn, bargain hunters

Posted on May 04, 2009 by Liz Martin.

I photographed the Coralville city-wide garage sale this weekend for a story with Meredith Hines-Dochterman.  (Almost left with a $5 rice cooker, but someone beat me to it.)  Loved the frilly ballerina costume, probably once so cherished, now hanging on a wire on sale for $5.  The former owner has a new sibling on the way this week, and her mom was making room for the baby. Meredith is working on a story for Saturday's Community section on how to hold ...

from the archive

Posted on May 01, 2009 by Liz Martin.

I'm digging through my archive once again as I build my portfolio for Barnstorm , and came across this photo from last August (which will not be in the portfolio, but I realized I'd never blogged about it..). Nothing spectacular, but keep in mind that the simple turning of this bolt was a big deal for downtown CR, as Alliant worked to restore steam to the businesses downtown that rely on it for temperature regulation. We had to go down ...
