GOP candidate kicks off secretary of state bid

Republican Matt Schultz, a Council Bluffs city councilman, has kicked off his campaign for Iowa Secretary of State.

Schultz says he is running to ensure free and fair elections, and to fight for Iowa jobs and business. At appearance over the weekend, including a stop in Johnson County, Schultz said, “creating jobs and strengthening business will be one of my top priorities as Secretary of State.”

As a city councilman, Schultz said, he has worked to lower the city tax levy and bring new jobs and companies like Google to Council Bluffs.

Schultz also emphasized the importance of elections and the secretary of state’s role as the “voters’ watchdog.”

“All eligible Iowans should be encouraged to vote, but I will not stand for people trying to cheat and illegally influence our elections. This is not a Republican issue or a Democrat issue, this is an Iowa issue,” Schultz said.

Schultz, who is serving his second term, is a graduate of Creighton Law School and the University of Iowa and is an attorney at the Law Firm of Coats, Schultz & Watson, LLP. He’s married with three children.
