Schwab captures win in USA vs. Russia dual

Posted on Nov 19, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

MOUNT VERNON — What does Doug Schwab consider his most memorable sporting moment? Maybe it’s a state title at Osage High School. It could be an NCAA title at the University of Iowa or wrestling at the 2008 Olympic Games. Actually, none of the above. According to Schwab, it hasn’t happened yet. “When you grow up with the brothers I did or in the (Dan) Gable philosophy that you’re never satisfied,” said Schwab, referring to his siblings Mark and Mike Schwab and the ...

Seniors one last chance to leave mark

Posted on Nov 12, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

IOWA CITY — The goal was to become Hawkeyes and continue the University of Iowa’s wrestling tradition. They wanted to join the list of champions they saw posted on the wall of the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex where they trained as youths. Now, a group of seniors is donning the black and gold singlets for one final season, with the hopes of reaching for individual goals in addition to leading the Hawkeyes to a third straight NCAA team title. Brands on wrestle-offs, St. John and McDonough

Posted on Nov 11, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

The University of Iowa Hawkeyes held their opening wrestle-offs last weekend and what head coach Tom Brands was a squad of wrestlers not resting on previous accomplishments and battling to be in the Hawkeyes lineup. "I learned that there's a lot of our guys that aren't content," Brands said. "Which is good." Brands said the approach to wrestle-offs was "it means a lot and it doesn't mean anything." One can only assume he was saying the final results weren't necessarily what was important ...

Metcalf focused on reclaiming title

Posted on Nov 10, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

IOWA CITY — One match doesn’t define University of Iowa wrestler Brent Metcalf. You won’t see him celebrate a win or dwell on a rare loss. So, it’s not surprising that his focus to recapture a national title and reassert himself as the nation’s top wrestler isn’t blurred by a need to avenge last year’s disappointing national finals loss to North Carolina State’s Darrion Caldwell. “My job is to go out and wrestle and go out and win,” Metcalf said. “It really doesn’t ...

The window to accomplish either of those feats is coming to a close and he knows he has one last shot to achieve his goals. “There isn’t another year,” Mueller said. “There isn’t a tomorrow.” Mueller begins his final campaign in a Cyclones singlet for the 2009-10 college wrestling season. Hawkeye fans treated to impressive home schedule

Posted on Oct 21, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

I was hoping to hold off on this to run as part of our media day coverage, but with the release of the 2009-10 season schedule (It's actually been post on the UI wrestling site for awhile) it begs to be addressed now. Iowa has an impressive home schedule, and fans, especially season ticket holders, will get their money's worth this year. You can look up and down the lineup and see great duals set for Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes kickoff their ...

Morningstar earns Stewart memorial scholarship

Morningstar earns Stewart memorial scholarship

Posted on Oct 20, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior wrestler Ryan Morningstar is far from being one-dimensional. Sure, wrestling never really leaves his mind. It’s always tucked in the back of his mind whether he’s in class, socializing or enjoying outdoor activities, but it’s not the only way to define him. Morningstar’s latest accolade supports that premise. He was named the recipient of the Marshall Stewart Scholarship awarded to an athlete based on citizenship, leadership and academics. “It’s a pretty honorable thing,” said Morningstar. “I ...

Charnowski notches arenacross title

CEDAR RAPIDS — Rochelle Charnowski says nothing comes naturally to her. Instead, she has to work hard at everything. The hard work has paid dividends, as she won her second straight Amateur National Arenacross championship in the women's division last weekend in Las Vegas. Charnowski, 25, of Cedar Rapids, has been successful, earning second place two years ago also, but it’s not always a smooth ride. “It’s never an easy task,” Charnowski said. “I wish it as always successful, but I don’t think ...

Hawkeye All-American heavyweight Dan Erekson underwent surgery earlier this week to repair a torn pectoral muscle suffered in practice last week. Erekson told media outlets that he suffered the injury during practice. He has already received treatment and is undergoing rehab. “It’s fixed,” Brands said. “He’s rehabbing and getting stronger every day. Every minute is a minute healed. We’re making progress.” Brands said Erekson was released from the hospital Tuesday and was even in the practice room Wednesday. Brands did not elaborate on ...

The Brands approach

Posted on Oct 16, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

CEDAR RAPIDS — University of Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands won’t ever be guilty of false praise. That’s not how he’s wired and probably a good reason the Hawkeyes are preseason favorites to win their third straight NCAA team title. “You’re talking to a guy that my assessments aren’t always positive even when maybe things are good,” Brands said Thursday before addressing the Linn-County I-Club at the Cedar Rapids Country Club along with women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder and men’s basketball coach ...

Wrestling saved at Norwich University

Posted on Oct 15, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

Courtesy of a Jason Bryant "tweet", I stumbled across this story. Norwich University, located in Northfield, Vt., has reinstated according to TimesArgus.com. The school announced at the end of the 2008 calendar year that programs would be cut due to "budgetary constraints" and the wrestling and tennis programs would be eliminated. The story said a record freshman class enrollment helped the programs remain fully funded varsity sports. Read the letters from school president Richard W. Schneiderabout the program's reinstatement. It might not seem ...

Hawkeyes, Cyclones perched atop WIN preseason rankings

Hawkeyes, Cyclones perched atop WIN preseason rankings

Posted on Oct 13, 2009 by KJ Pilcher.

It's no surprise that the University of Iowa and Iowa State University are the top two teams in Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine's  preseason NCAA Division I wrestling rankings. The Hawkeyes are attempting for a third national team title. Last year's national tournament in St. Louis wasn't the most polished performance from Coach Tom Brands' crew, but they were able to get the job done. My No. 1 mark for a great team is being able to win when you aren't at your ...
