Coe better than even it expected

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Coe Kohawks prep for their upcoming season each late summer/early fall by finding a nearby school they are not scheduled to play and scrimmaging. This year’s opponent was Grand View. “After we scrimmaged Grand View, I thought we’d be lucky to win four games,” said Coe linebacker Tate Harrison. “It didn’t go very well.” Harrison was off in his prediction. Way, way off. Coe went 9-1 instead, finishing second to Central in the Iowa Conference and securing an at-large ...

IOWA CITY — Matt Tvedte couldn’t wait. Another practice was complete and it was time to strap on the old feed bag. This wasn’t just another meal for the Iowa City High senior. This was Wednesday night supper, an event. “Don’t know what we’re having, yet,” Tvedte said. “I’m hoping cheesy bread, cheesy potatoes and either lasagna or baked chicken.” Every Wednesday during the football season, City High’s starting offensive linemen congregate at A.J. Derby’s home in Coralville to hang out, pig out ...

Cornell went 6-34 under him, 1-31 in the Iowa Conference but appeared to be an improved team in 2009, ...

CBS Sportsline’s Doyel rips Ohio State

And the Big Ten Conference. And the Iowa Hawkeyes. Sort of. The columnist wrote a piece about Saturday's Ohio State-Iowa football game that is titled "Everybody a loser in Ohio State's 'disgusting' victory." Basically, Doyel takes OSU Coach Jim Tressel to task for his conservative play calling late in the game. He also ripped Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, with somewhat of a caveat. Then he ripped the Big Ten Conference for its lack of quality. What do you think of what Doyel wrote? Here's ...

CEDAR RAPIDS — Matt Dillon will never forget it. It was 1978, and his Cornell Rams destroyed the Coe Kohawks, 67-13, in Mount Vernon. It was such a blowout of a football game, Cornell Coach Jerry Clark allowed one of his players to try the lost art of drop kicking after touchdowns. “Mike Looney, my very best friend in the world,” Dillon said. “He tried three of them. He missed the first one and made the last two. I didn’t know what ...

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Xavier football coach Duane Schulte knows that some members of the local media poke fun at his team’s seemingly well-rehearsed and cliched interview answers, and he’s OK with that ribbing. “We just want to keep doing our jobs,” is a favorite quote. “The line blocked great and the scout team gave us great looks all week in practice,” is another. Absolutely no bulletin board material will be provided by these guys. Braggadocio is not allowed. Kirk Ferentz and the ...

At least that's what it looks like. The former Chicago Cubs slugger appeared publically recently, with his skin tone noticably lighter. A backlash from years of steroid abuse perhaps? "He's not trying to be Michael Jackson," former Cubs employee Rebecca Polihronis, one of Sosa's friends, told the Chicago Tribune. Polihronis said Sosa is in the process of a skin rejuvenation treatment that has a side effect of temporarily brighter skin tone. She said Sosa is going through the skin rejuvenation because of years ...

If you haven't heard or seen this by now, here is video of University of New Mexico women's soccer player Elizabeth Lambert, who has been suspended for indefinitely for extremely rough play in a recent match against Brigham Young. Lambert, whose hometown has been taken off the UNM's Web site, was caught punching a BYU player, kicking another one and pulling a third down to the ground by her hair. It's kind of women's soccer meets MMA. Anyway, here's the video.
