Jefferson’s Sweeney makes college commitment

Posted on Nov 03, 2009 by Jeff Johnson.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior shortstop Kellen Sweeney has committed to play college baseball next at the University of San Diego, according to Perfect Game USA.

Sweeney, younger brother of Oakland Athletics outfielder Ryan Sweeney, is recuperating from Tommy John surgery after tearing an elbow ligament in Jefferson’s final game this past season. He was projected a top five-round MLB draft pick until his injury.

Sweeney played  in the 2009 AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classic in San Diego late in the summer. Ryan Sweeney originally committed to San Diego State before signing professionally after being drafted by the Chicago White Sox.
