Iowa’s Lickliter: Team has ‘turned the corner’
Posted on Nov 19, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
IOWA CITY — The negatives swirl around the Iowa men’s basketball program like sharks swimming near a shipwreck. The Hawkeyes (0-2) opened with a pair of losses for the first time since 1970. If Iowa falls tonight at home against Bowling Green (1-1), it’s the first time since 1919 the team has dropped its first three games. Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter understands the concern surrounding his program. He’s just not ready to give up on the team after only two games. “When you’re ...

Iowa to play Big Ten football games in December?
Posted on Nov 18, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
IOWA CITY — Like a Thanksgiving Day turkey, the Big Ten’s annual tradition of ending its football season before the November holiday is, well, cooked. Beginning next fall, the Big Ten adds a permanent bye to its league schedule. That stretches the eight-game league slate over nine weeks and now ends the fourth Saturday in November. Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz liked the status quo of completing the league season before Thanksgiving but now that his team must play after the holiday, ...

Iowa players see progress despite loss
Posted on Nov 18, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
The mood was lighter among Iowa's younger players following Tuesday's 52-50 loss to Duquesne. It wasn't that they were pleased with the outcome. Quite the contrary, they were visibly angry about it. But the effort was there, which will help them recover for Friday's game against Bowling Green." "We came in and want to win all the hustle plays," Iowa freshman Brennan Cougill said. "And we won most of them, taking charges, going after loose balls. Just stuff it doesn't take talent, ...

With the game tied 24-24, the ball at its 33 and 52 seconds left at Ohio State, Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz chose to play for overtime rather than try to win the game in regulation. He's caught flak nationally and locally for the decision, but Ferentz still sticks with his original thought process. Here's how Ferentz and tackle Bryan Bulaga describe the decision to play for overtime.

Bowl projections rund drei: Two wins and it’s Christmas in Arizona for Iowa (and Iowa State)
Posted on Nov 16, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
A pair of wins this weekend by the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones could vault both into Arizona bowl games later this year. Iowa appears to be a solid choice by the Fiesta Bowl (Jan.4) if it can beat the Gophers on Saturday. At 10-2 and a likely spot in the BCS top 12, Iowa is an attractive team for any bowl, especially one in Arizona. Iowa fans are known to travel in droves for bowl games (more than ...

Video: Roses, fans and bands outside Ohio Stadium
Posted on Nov 14, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
Outside Ohio Stadium this morning I ran into fans with champagne and roses in case Iowa pulls off the upset and wins the Big Ten championship. Some of the Iowa fans flew from Alabama, Mississippi, Cedar Rapids and St. Louis. Others drove from Iowa City and Cleveland. With the temperature hovering near 60 degrees, few clouds and a lot of sun, it looks like a great day for football. I also took a peak at the Ohio State Marching Band, widely considered the ...

Recalling the dark scene surrounding last win at Ohio State
Posted on Nov 13, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
This story was published in 2006 on the 15th anniversary of Iowa's last win at Ohio State: On Nov. 1, 1991, Gang Lu, a 28-year-old disgruntled doctoral student, went on a murderous rampage in Iowa City, killing six people, including himself. That day, Iowa's football team flew to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State. Players were transfixed on hotel televisions after their arrival. At their home school, their home campus, their home city, they saw a scene that failed to resonate. Not ...

Defense vital for Iowa’s chances at Ohio State

IOWA CITY — To state the obvious, Iowa will rely on its defense Saturday against Ohio State. With a backup freshman quarterback leading Iowa’s offense against the Big Ten’s top-ranked defense, it’s up to Iowa’s defense not only to keep the Buckeyes (8-2) from scoring but to generate turnovers and possibly score itself. “For us to win right now given our injury situation, common sense would say we have to play good defense,” Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz said. “And we’re going to ...

Video: Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz; Tyler Sash provides spark on Iowa’s special teams

Injuries have shredded Iowa’s special teams this year almost as much as it has the team’s offense. Kick returner Paul Chaney Jr., who handled both kickoffs and punts, was lost for the season with a knee injury against Michigan. His replacement at punt returner, wide receiver Colin Sandeman, suffered a concussion on a vicious hit at Michigan State. Iowa has tried wide receiver Keenan Davis and cornerback Amari Spievey at punt returner, but now seems set on sophomore safety Tyler Sash ...

Iowa’s Aaron Fuller bulks up, and the rebounds come down
Posted on Nov 09, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
IOWA CITY — Aaron Fuller’s got game, and everybody could see that last year. Iowa’s sophomore forward scored 16 points last year in a road loss at Penn State. He showed a good left-handed shot from the perimeter and solid post moves as well. But Fuller, who stands 6-foot-6, often was missing from stretches of games and was overpowered by many of the Big Ten’s top posts. Gaining strength was an off-season priority, and 10 pounds later, it shows. “I’m just trying to ...

Even with loss at Ohio State, Iowa still has a BCS shot
Posted on Nov 09, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
If Iowa wins at Ohio State (insert eyeroll) on Saturday, the Hawkeyes still have a shot at one of the five Bowl Championship Series bowls. The winner Saturday wraps up the Big Ten's automatic BCS berth and trip to the Rose Bowl. The loser enters the at-large pool and a likely New Year's Day bowl in Florida. Well, Iowa still looks attractive among for the other BCS bowls -- the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange -- should the Hawkeyes beat Minnesota in the ...
