Video: Iowa men drop first home opener in 47 years
Posted on Nov 16, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.
Iowa’s men’s basketball team dropped its first home opener in 47 years Sunday night in a 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio. Iowa hadn’t lost a home opener since 1962, and it was the first season-opening loss for Iowa in 32 years. Iowa’s last season-opening defeat was in 1978.
Freshmen Eric May and Cully Payne led Iowa’s scoring attack. May, a guard/forward from Dubuque, scored 13 points, while Payne, the team’s point guard, added 12.
Iowa trailed for much of the game and fell behind by 13 points with 7 minutes, 36 seconds left in the second half. Iowa cut its deficit to five points at 54-49 with 4:24 left after center Jarryd Cole blocked UTSA’s Terry Fields. But Iowa struggled down the stretch and couldn’t make its possessions count.
Iowa was brutal from the perimeter, shooting 18.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line and hitting only five three-p0inters.
Iowa (0-1) hosts Duquense at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Steve Alfraud damaged the program so badly that I almost feel bad for the new coach. Alfraud left such a bitter taste in my mouth and so many other Hawk fans that I talk to that I don't think this program will have it where coach Davis had it at. Alfraud alienated so many fans with his arrogant and cocky attittude. I used to watch every game passionately and make it to a few of them a year, now i didn't even know they had a game tonight untill i saw they lost the home opener.

Um, Alford has nothing to do with the play of this team. Get over it. And, just in case you forgot, Alford actually had a winning a record. Alford (dislike him as you and I both do as a person) was not a terrible coach. He wasn’t a GREAT coach, was a bad community member, arrogant, and generally dislikable – but his teams were half-way fun to watch and they usually won more than they lost. I’m glad he’s gone, but come on … Steve Alford is NOT the problem. There are less fans now than there were when he was coach. CHA had no problem filling up when they had their undefeated home season recently under Alford. The problem is: 1) BORING, BORING, BORING basketball. 2) Subpar talent (compared to the rest of the Big Ten). And most importantly: 3) WAY OVERPRICED TICKETS. 4) A virtually non-existent marketing campaign and the destruction of all fan friendly activities meant to stoke interest (which, again, Alford has nothing to do with). I wouldn’t pay $10 a ticket to watch this team play catch.

Prediction: The Iowa football team will win more games this year than the Iowa basketball team. Not really a stretch by any imagination.

Karjolf – I think you are correct. A program can not continue to have their top returning player transfer out year after year, then combine it with well below average recruiting.
I will go with the following dire prediction for this Iowa basketball season.
5-7 non-conference
2-16 in Big Ten play
0-1 in Big Ten Tournament
7-24 overall – yikes!

Live by the three, die by the three. There will be some games this year that Iowa will win because they'll shoot the three very well. Last night's game showed the other extreme, that there will be many games this year that they will lose because they don't shoot the three well. IMO, Iowa will struggle all year against athletic teams that have the ability to extend defensively and contest the three point shot. Expect a lot of inconsistency with this team. Too much youth to expect a consistent performance from game to game.

Can you red shirt a coach?

Absolutely painful to watch. Not only is the team not competitive, the arena experience is boring! When long time fans have no idea there's a game, that's a big problem folks.

Alfraud is indeed the Great Satan in the demise of Iowa basketball to its lowest point in the memory of this observer, who has been a Hawkeye hoops fan since Murray Weir and Chuck Darling played. But evidence mounts that Lickliter is not the man to restore the glory. We should wish him well at the coaching level at which he is comfortable, and bring in a man (or woman!) who can recruit Big Ten caliber athletes and teach them to play Big Ten caliber basketball.

Are we really trying to blame Alford for this pathetic showing of a basketball game? Alford did not cause last years players to transfer out of the program, bring horrid 3 point shooting to the table and strip every virtue of athleticism from the Iowa basketball program. Fans will appear when the quality of basketball improves. If you choose to avoid Iowa basketball because of the coach of the past you need question how big a fan you really claim to be. The team is just bad…really bad.

it's legit to blame Alfraud for the hopeless situation the Hawkeye hoops program finds itself in. he sullied the reputation of the program and the school by coddling criminals, playing favorites and ignoring talented players who didn't kiss up to him.
coach Lipliner had a Herculean task ahead of him and clearly isn't making any headway. it's gonna be tough for Hawkeye Basketball to climb out of the Alfraud abyss.

I think Iowa loses 30 men's basketball games this year UNLESS drastic action is taken now, so here's my proposal: Send Bluder and the women to play the men's schedule, where they will put up a good fight, and send the Lickliter and his boys over to play the women's schedule where they, at least, will match-up a bit better and, perhaps, lose only 25…
