Here’s what B.J. Armstrong had to say about Iowa

The rumor mill of Iowa basketball continues to swirl with names rising and dropping on a minute-by-minute basis.

Iowa fired Coach Todd Lickliter on Monday, and each day a new coach generates serious interest from Iowa fans. The latest flavor is former Iowa great B.J. Armstrong, a former NBA point guard and now a player agent. Message boards and Facebook groups have nominated Armstrong as Iowa’s next head coach like delegates at a political convention.

Armstrong, 42, served as a member of Iowa’s six-member search committee when the school hired Lickliter three years ago. He told me today he’s “too old” to get caught up in rumors and innuendo. He didn’t confirm or deny interest in the Iowa coaching position.

“At this moment I don’t have any comment about it,” said Armstrong, who ranks fourth all-time in Iowa scoring with 1,705 points. “Once I have an opportunity, a break in my schedule, I’ll reach out there to see if I can be of any help and offer my assistance. I hadn’t had an opportunity to really think about.

“It (Lickliter’s firing) happened, what, like this week? At some point, they’ll begin the (search) process. Until then I don’t have anything to say about it.”

Armstrong, a Detroit native, played 11 years in the NBA, winning three titles with the Chicago Bulls and was selected to the 1994 NBA All-Star Game. He played at Iowa from 1986 through 1989.

For certain, BJ would put butts in seats during the first season. He represents what most of us 30-somethings remember the most about Iowa basketball. Yes, I remember Ravelling and Lute but TD's teams were the hot teams when I was in jr. high and high school. He certainly still has a passion for Iowa basketball and knows a little about the fan base here. He's been a winner at all levels and knows what it takes, but can he transfer that to a 19-year old kid and ultimately into wins? I think it's an interesting option.

I agree – while I appreciate what coaches Olson & Raveling did for Iowa basketball, Dr. Tom is my favorite basketball coach. It's too bad Iowa got rid of Dr. Tom – maybe it's karma – Dr. Tom got a raw deal and look where the program is now. BJ would definitely generate interest and put butts in seats. It'd be nice to get someone with an Iowa connection and appreciation for our school….but it'd be nice to have a winning program too.

Could you imagine if you're a Chicago/Detroit/Flint area parent of a blue chipper and BJ ARMSTRONG stops by for dinner and a chat about your son playing at Iowa? Played for the Bulls championship teams. Played with Jordan. Currently an NBA player agent……for Derrick Rose. I'm pretty sure the parents will be informing their child that they'll play at Iowa. This will be George Raveling 2.0 ….and that's a great thing. Heck, he may even be able to coach a bit. If he can't, that's what his assistants will be for. Bring back Craig Neal. I'm sure he's pretty sick of Alford by now.

Dr. Tom as the assistant coach? I bet you a buck he'd consider it. Just look at the picture above. awwwww! cute!

    My vote is for BJ.
