Corbett meets Culver in Des Moines on Thursday before Culver comes to Cedar Rapids to talk business, housing

Posted on Nov 11, 2009 by Rick Smith.

Mayor-elect Ron Corbett is meeting with Gov. Chet Culver in Des Moines late Thursday morning. Corbett, who will be in Des Moines to give a speech to a university leadership group, has said he wants to encourage Culver to name someone from the Cedar Rapids area as the state’s new economic development chief.

By mid-afternoon Thursday, Culver will head to Cedar Rapids to announce new disaster policies related to business and housing. Specifically related to housing, he will address the issue of “duplication of benefits,” which is a review that precedes payments to homeowners to make sure they are not getting paid twice for the same thing.

Culver’s news conference in Cedar Rapids is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. at Town Centre, 201 Third Ave. SE.

It looks as if Culver has found some money for the homeless. People have been over on 4th Ave SE where Culver was at that homeless shelter measuring the site for another building. I wonder how much that is going to cost. I wonder if it should be seen as a sign of what is to come. If Culver is "finding money" for his wife's pet projects like homeless shelters in the middle of a super deep recession does that signal that they expect a lot more homeless?

Don't get me wrong. The homeless need shelter. However there are plenty of buildings that could be bought or rented and renovated for the cost of a new building and would house a lot more people.

It will further destroy the already next to nothing value of the houses in that area and advance the movement towards the Cedar Rapids Ghetto.

This is a trophy for Mrs. Culver. Nothing else. Just another re election bid helping a few while hundreds are still struggling after losing their homes and businesses in the flood.

I wonder if they will put her name on it. The Culver wing of the Dady Homeless shelter.

The broke meeting the bankrupt. The City of Cedar Rapids and the State of Iowa over spent on frivolous, feel good projects when the times were good. Natural disaster and depression find the cupboard bare. Corbett's being elected is a direct result of public dissatisfaction with all that.

The fact that Gov. Culver is even meeting with Mayor Elect Corbett should be a warning to the Governor. Somebody's ox must be gored to reset priorities in the light of new realities. If not, Governor Elect somebody other than Culver of Iowa may be an applicable title.

It would sadden the Late Jim Welborn the founder of Willis Dady Shelter to read the Above comment from Watch Dog.
Jim who was homeless himself for a number of years in his life, founded the Willis Dady shelter as a way to pay back all the people who help him on his road to recovery.
Who knows maybe Jim is reaching down from heaven to keep the shelter top notch and to even serve more people. For if you knew Jim you would know that in life he Love God and trusted God to get the shelter up in running in the beginning, when he spoke to local Churches and ask for their support to start the Willis Dady Shelter.
