Decision not immiment on painting water tower near Kinnick
Posted on Aug 05, 2009 by Diane Heldt.

This 1984 aerial view, looking north, shows Kinnick Stadium in 1984. At upper right is the water tower that some, including Iowa athletics director Gary Barta, would like to see emblazoned with a Hawkeye logo.
University of Iowa officials have discussed painting the water tower near Kinnick Stadium but have no plans to make a decision in the immediate future.
A recent online petition, created by UI graduate Derek Yoder, urges the painting of the white water tower near Kinnick. The petition had more than 3,400 signatures Tuesday.
The idea has long been on the radar of UI officials, interim Spokesman Tom Moore said. But they are aware of the petition and it has been discussed by officials in the Athletic Department, Facilities Management and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
“Right now one of the key issues is paying for the project, especially given the current economic climate,” Moore said. “Would this be seen as a necessity or not?”
UI Athletics Director Gary Barta recently said he would like to see the water tower given the Hawkeye treatment.
The tower looms over Kinnick but sits on property owned by UI Hospitals and Clinics. But the water tower is controlled by UI Facilities Management. Any decision would be up to that department, Moore said.
“But they have always been very gracious to include” hospital and athletics officials in conversations, he said.
The tower is repainted for maintenance every 10 to 15 years, Moore said. It was last painted in 2006 at a cost of $370,000.
Hospital authorities have not adopted an official position about painting the tower, Moore said. It’s possible future hospital expansion could require moving or replacing the tower, he said.

i have an idea…for all those dolts that shell out the big bucks to cover the outrageous salary of Captain Kirk (via booster clubs, or other back office deals that cover the perks), why don't you dip in your pockets once again, and each donate $20 to buy a gallon of Sherwin Williams and then paint it in time for kickoff?

I believe the good Captain has earned every penny. If you are jeleous, why don't you become a great college football coach and earn your own damn 3 million dollars. Everyone makes choices in their career path, and he made some good ones.

"The tower looms over Kinnick but sits on property owned by UI Hospitals and Clinics"
=====================================
Wrong. UIHC doesn't really "own" anything. It's the State of Iowa's, under control of The Board of Regents. Also, there's no such thing as UI Hospitals and Clinics. It's now "University of Iowa Healthcare". Any logo on that tower would end up being some kind of "tigerhawk" with some type of UIHC logo combined to satisfy both parties & the Regents. Total cost would probably have to be picked up by athletic dept.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics does, indeed, exist. University of Iowa Health Care is an entity that includes University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as well as the Carver College of Medicine and UI Physicians. (The hospital, by the way, has large "University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics" lettering and the "UIHC" logo on the west outside wall.)
As for the water tower, if these people who are so eager to have the logo pained on the tower want to put some money where their mouth is and none of the parties involved have any problem, I say go for it–although perhaps a UIHC logo on the 50-yard line would be a nice return gesture.

Let's see…….the success of Iowa's Football program, being ranked in the Top 10 in 2002, 03 an 04 and winning another January 1 bowl in 2009………..and Captain Kirk is overpaid?????????????????

By industry standards, Coach Ferentz is a good coach getting good pay. However, it's the industry that's messed up. How do we allow coaches to be paid at least six figures, if not more, yet teachers, nurses, paramedics, cops, and firefighters, who are arguably MUCH more important in society than a football coach, be making significantly less? Does anyone really believe the work that coaches such as Ferentz do is that much more important than an ER nurse? Or the paramedic that scrapes you off the highway and gives you top notch emergency medical care to keep you alive until you can get to that underpaid ER nurse?

Perhaps since the queen of the UIHC Donna Katen-Bahensky has now taken her show up to Wisconsin, more rationale discussions can be carried out on this topic and others within UIHC

Did anyone else watch the Bridgestone Invitational golf tourny this weekend on TV? The water tower is decked out with "Firestone" all over it, and they must have showed it a zillion times during breaks and between shots. Same thing would happen if we had ours painted with Iowa City, or the Tiger Hawk, or anything….
LET's GET IT DONE!
