Fire destroys Wellman home

The home of Robert and Suzan Hopp was destroyed by fire Tuesday.

The cause of the fire reported at 12:45 p.m. at 1506 First Ave. is unknown, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Hours after the house was engulfed in flames, Wellman firefighters were spraying water, and chopping through pieces of the home with axes as smoke still rose into the air.

Though still standing, the inside of the house was charred most of the way through.

The Wellman Volunteer Ambulance, Kalona First Responders, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Alliant Energy all responded to the scene.

The American Red Cross is assisting the Hopp family.
