Timothy Reynolds was formally charged Tuesday with attempted murder and willful injury causing serious injury in Sunday night’s shooting in southeast Cedar Rapids.

Reynolds, 17, of 55 Robins Rd., Hiawatha, was arrested shortly after Christopher Pearson was shot in the abdomen in the 1400 block of Fourth Avenue SE. Officers called to the scene about 8:30 p.m. Sunday tracked Reynolds to the nearby Rose Apartments building, 1407 Third Ave. SE.

Witnesses told police Reynolds and Pearson exchanged words before the shooting.

Pearson, 38, was taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where he remained in the intensive care unit Tuesday.

Reynolds, charged as an adult because he’s within six months of his 18th birthday, is held at the county’s juvenile detention center. Bail is set at $125,000, cash only.

When will the senseless acts ever end? His actions were adult in nature, so he should be charged as an adult!

I wish you knew the whole story!! Do you have a son? How would you feel if a drunk man with a history of violent crimes came at your son or relative with a knife and machete? I cant wait until the detectives are done interviewing everyone!!!!

I have two sons. First my kids don't hang out with seedy people. Second my sons don't carry guns. He helped create his problem by hanging out with seedy and people and carrying a gun!

I agree with what you are saying for your family. Try moving to the neighborhood this kids family lives in. The facts are not out . He may care a gun because he is being attacked by bigots with knifes. If he is found to be a gang banger than prison will be a good place for him. May be the bigot needs to be in prison?

It is odd that under age kids who get caught with alcohol or smokes don't get a free pass because they might be six months or one month from legal age.
It might also be a good idea to remember, we don't know what happened and this boy has not been convicted of anything yet.

When did Hiawatha turn into such a dumping ground for all the dregs of society?
This is not the first time some low life criminal from there made the news.
Sounds to me like some greedy landlords have jumped on the cash cow Sect. 8 wagon.
So much for the nice, clean, and safe 'burbs.
    Good luck Hiawatha….nice knowing ya.

Nice – put him in juvenile detention so he can mentor up-and-coming thugs. Since he's charged as an adult, why not throw him in with adults? Or is he weak and defenselss without his gun?

They are not telling the whole truth. The man who was shot was calling the boy a n*gg*r and telling him that he needs to go back to Chicago (the boy is from Cedar Rapids) and stabbed him in the face multiple times. Yes the boy was wrong in shooting the man with an illegal gun, but really what was he to do in that situation? Sit there and let the man stab him to death or defend himself.

We don't see any stab marks on his face in the picture above.
While shouting racial epithets is provocative and ignorant, it doesn't cause actual physical harm. You can't shoot somebody for name-calling and acting like an a–h—.

If this man did the things stated in this article I would say the young man had every right to defend himself. He shot to protect himself and did not kill the bigot.. My first reaction was the young man was gang banging. If your family lives in the rough neighborhood you learn early to live or die. The kid could be using the logic of the NRA and the weapon was for protection. The kid should be treated as a Adult which means he can defend his body from being stabbed.
