Iowa cat diagnosed with H1N1 flu

Even pets aren’t immune to the flu.
A cat brought to a veterinary center at Iowa State University tested positive for the H1N1 virus, state officials announced today.
The Iowa Department of Public Health and Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship said the case serves as a reminder that people not only can spread illness to other people, but to animals, as well.
Dustin Vande Hoef, spokesman for the ag department, said the Iowa case may be the first cat diagnosed in the United States with H1N1, but pet ferrets in other states have also been diagnosed with the virus.
Vande Hoef said the H1N1 strain circulating among people has not been found in Iowa pigs, according to the state’s monitoring system.
The 13-year-old indoor cat that was brought to ISU’s Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center has recovered.
Two family members had a flu-like illness before the cat became ill, said the health department’s public health veterinarian, Dr. Ann Garvey.
Garvey said the case wasn’t completely unexpected, as other flu strains have been found in cats in the past.
Pet-owners should keep their distance from their pets, just as they do from other people when they are ill, Vande Hoef said.
A veterinarian should be contacted when any pet shows signs of respiratory illness, he said.
