Legislators criticize trip to Disney center

IOWA CITY (AP) — Two legislators are criticizing University of Iowa officials over plans to spent $130,000 to send 35 hospital workers to Orlando, Fla., for several days of training offered at a center connected with Disney World.
Reps. Jeff Kaufmann and Pat Grassley question spending money on the trip and training at a time when the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are dealing with severe budget problems.
Gordon Williams, the university health care’s chief of operations, says plans call for sending hospital administrators, doctors, nursers and other staffers to the Disney Institute in Orlando in the spring for 2-1/2 days of training.
The Disney Institute focuses on customer service, an area Williams says the hospital needs to improve.

In this time of financial crisis, it does seem to be "a waste". Is customer service THAT hard to figure out? Spend 50,000 and send them to my house for 2 days and I will teach them alll about it.

Really! I don't think they need to go to Disney to learn to listen to their customers/patients and not be jerks. Duh!

It is a waste of money, but Disney World is known as the "Happiest Place on Earth"…ha ha

Good editorial and comments. For more about the public relations, "patient satisfaction," alternative ways to deal with the problems, and questions about UIHC managment's judgment generally, see

This such a joke, the hospital will not replace the nursing staff and will work with mimium staff and they wonder why patients are not happy. They need to get out of there offices and work close with the nurses and they would find out what needs to be done and it won't cost a thing, in fact it will help to have more staff to keep the patients happy!
