Iowa soliciting input on future of Everclear in state

Posted on Nov 25, 2009 by admin.

everclearWill sales of Everclear and other highly-concentrated alcohol products be restricted or banned in Iowa?

The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission is looking into the future of Everclear, a 151-proof liquor which is among the state’s 100 best-selling products. The commission isn’t necessarily looking to ban the liquor, but may consider tightening regulations and offering more public education.

State regulators decided about six months ago to stop selling the 190-proof Everclear in Iowa, but the 151-proof version is still available. A 19-year-old Des Moines man was rushed to a Des Moines hospital earlier this month after ingesting a large amount of Everclear as part of an alleged fraternity hazing incident at Drake University.

The commission is now accepting public input on the issue. CLICK HERE to submit your comments.

Once again, the public suffers because one person didn't use their brain.

  2. what the h.ell? STOP intruding on my rights gov. I use the 190 proof alcohol to make edible wood finishes for children's toys (just in case they decide to chew on them). I also use them to rarely make alcoholic punch. First they came for the smokers, and I said nothing as I don't smoke, then they came for the 190 proof booze and I said nothing because they didn't even tell me. At what point does it start looking good to break the law by building my own still? The government has become too much of a nanny state.

      Dear Gazette reader,
Where have you been? Our rights have been being taken away slowly for years!! It is helped along by people like you who say to themselves, I don't smoke, I don't care. To the lawmakers that says continue to restrict things, we don't care. Pretty soon it will be illegal to purchase soda for a child(its not good for them) or illegal to purchase anything but fresh foods because we need to stop obesity. Wake up!! Fight for the few rights we have left!!

  3. Drinking too much water will send you to the hospital too. Do we need a law for that as well?

So I'm not allowed to distill, and now not allowed to purchase nearly pure grade, either? What's the point of paying taxes on this, again? I use pure ethanol on a number of work activities, none of which involve consumption. Is allowing a version with only 20% less alcohol and more impure supposed to magically prevent alcohol abuse by the immature?

Hey Joe Camel, You do realize with your name and pic you are advertising cigarettes, right?
Perhaps the govt in their infinate wisdome could figure out how you are the cause of kids picking up smoking today. LOL The thought is almost ridiculous enough to be a govt idea. LMAO

im not sure what the numbers are, but i used to know a few farmers who distilled corn and made their own fuel for their farm equipment. if the 190 proof is gone, then i imagine as usually happens, (see prohibition) farm thefts will spike or even a small black market would develop in Iowa for purchasing of grain alcohol. Unfortunately , once its illegal, people are less likely to report when someone overdoses, since its a crime to even possess it now. This kids may have died had that been the case. Is that what we really want

I saw someone give another person a shot of everclear and tell him it was vodka. He drank it and had to be rushed to the hospital. The only thing my husband and I use it for now is cleaning fitting for our hone brewery.
I also went to Drake and have seen some of the hazing that goes on not only at frat houses, but also sororities. Hazing should also be banned.

  8. Probably should take away ALL vehicles, since 300-400 people die each year in Iowa because of vehicles.

  9. JoeCamel says:

It says right on the bottle to no ingest without dilution. And you think force feeding pure ethanol to underage kids isn't already illegal? We don't need the government playing nanny for every little danger in the world, requiring child locks on a liquor cabinet.

  10. Hazin says:

we have problems enforcing controlled substances already, lets add to that because some people are stupid and needed to be weeded out anyway :p

  11. JoeCamel says:

It's the exact same substance just watered down slightly, anyway. How about the state just piles on some more taxes or shortchanges me the water amount if they really care that much (which I'm sure no one would if it weren't for that little Drake pi55ant.)

  12. [...] I wrote this whole post about this article. It was all about how government is always trying to be our mom telling us what we can and [...]

  13. RedGecko says:

What is the point of restricting Everclear 151 if other liquors with 151 proof (such as Bacardi Rum) are still freely available?
