Turkey Trot is a 4K and 8K race in Marion where runners and walkers come together to support the community. Holiday Mini-Retreats

Spiritual director Dorothy Whiston, D.Min., will offer two mini-retreats in preparation for the holiday season at First Christian Church, 900 Lincolnshire Pl., Coralville. 'Gratitude and Forgiveness: The Two Sides of God's 'Ledger'' will explore the 'economy' of a fully human life and spiritual practices to help sustain a grateful and forgiving heart. It will be held Sat., Nov. 21, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. 'Saying Yes to God' will help people enter into the Advent season, and the incarnation of God in the person of Jesus, by reflecting on what it means to say 'yes' to God with our whole lives, as well as a simple Rule of Life to support doing that day-to-day. This program will be on Sat., Dec. 5, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Both events are funded through a Lilly Foundation Sabbatical Grant and are open to the public free of charge. The Catherine McAuley Center (CMC) will provide citizenship exam preparation classes at no cost every Saturday from October 17 to November 21, 2009. Classes will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at CMC located at 866 Fourth Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids.

Materials will be available to prepare for the revised American Citizenship and Government test The class will include practice for the application interview, practice for the written portion of the exam as well as the American History and Government portion. The class will use study books, audio CDs and DVDs to as preparation tools.

CMC provides one-on-one tutoring for students who would like to improve and expand their English skills in preparation for the citizenship interview or everyday communication. Please contact Ann McNee at CMC at 319-363-4993 to register or with any questions about the Center and its programs.

wall-mounted face, a tumbler with an owl wearing an etched crown, a tiny vase featuring a nude female figure with long, tangled tresses of hair, and a totem-like candlestick holder in the shape of a ceramic goat--the most diverse show of pottery forms that AKAR exhibits each year is even more varied and interesting for 2009.

AKAR, a downtown Iowa City art and design gallery with a national reputation for its ceramics shows, will present 30 "brand new" artists for their annual holiday invitational beginning November 13. None of the artists--who give the show its name by sending five works apiece--have been specially featured before in the gallery, though many have been around clay and pottery for years.

"We are looking for new talent all the time via magazines, show invitations, show cards, and studio open houses," said Sanjay Jani, who owns and runs AKAR with his wife, Jigna. "The best thing that has happened to us is that our reputation has grown over the years and artists have learned our passions and interests."

The couple's passions and interests cover a lot of territory. A love for ceramic work from potters near and far began a tradition of monthly shows in 1999. AKAR continues to order select international design products into its downtown gallery from around the world. The Janis also recently renovated a building in a new location in Iowa City to house their residential architecture and design firm. Pottery shows in the past have focused on forms and shapes influenced by buildings and construction.

"I find that we are always bias for forms exploring the vessel," Sanjay said. "A successful pot unites form, function, mass, space, decoration, firing, and craftsmanship as a singular experience."

Iowa Artisans Gallery opens its annual Handmade for the Holidays exhibit November 13- December 31. Ornaments in blown glass, ceramic, wood and paper take center stage during this time. Also featured are a wide variety of handpainted silk scarves and neckties, higher end and fashion jewelry and "message boxes" by Mikutowski woodworking. Handmade toys include hand puppets using felted recycled sweaters, and wooden pull toys. The Gallery's 200 artists from across the country supply unusual handmade pieces in various media: ceramics, glass, wood, metal, fiber, as well paintings, original prints and holiday cards. Many artists work with recycled materials. The Gallery was named by readers of the Iowa City Press Citizen as both the area's Best Place to Buy Gifts and the Best Art Gallery in 2009, and is currently celebrating its 25^th Anniversary.

Iowa Artisans Gallery will participate in a December 5 downtown holiday open house, "There's no place like HERE for the holidays," 10am – 5pm at 21 locations.

Iowa Artisans Gallery was established by artists in 1984 and is celebrating its 25^th Anniversary. We feature work by American artists, a rarity in retail these days. We are focused on Midwestern artists wherever possible. Daily hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10am-6pm; Thursday's "Downtown Shopping Night" 10am – 7pm; Saturday 10am-5:30pm and Sunday 12-4pm. Holiday hours will start in December. Dawn's Hide & Bead Away will offer a glass making flamework class on Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 10am to 2pm with instructor Wendy Ford. Participants must have completed Flame I or the equivalent to take this workshop.

This workshop will continue to explore the art of lampworking with a torch and glass rods. In this class, you will learn more techniques for manipulating color, making the perfect dot, and shaping with a goal of making a variety of more complicated beads.

Participants must be at least 15 years old to sign up for this class.

Buildings Workshop (family-friendly event) - Kids will take a guided tour of the History Center's exhibit of the buildings of Cedar Rapids by John Stephen Klopp. Klopp is best known locally for his watercolor paintings of area farms and rural landscapes. Children will look for architectural details in these paintings and will then create a 3-dimensional paper bag building.

Saturday, November 14^th 10:30 to 11:30 am

Scrapbook Workshop (family-friendly event) - Kids will view scrapbooks from the Linge Library's collection at the History Center. Each child will create a scrapbook page to take home. Scrapbook pages can be enhanced by if children will bring along 2-dimensional pieces to include on their page, such as movie stubs, or cards, or photographs.

Shadow Box Workshop (family-friendly event) - Kids will search Richard Pinney's murals for clues about the people and businesses represented in his work displayed at the History Center. Pinney, a local artist and writer, was also a newspaper editor, cartoonist, and public relations director. His work is found in museums, publications, posters, and calendars. His wooden box sculptures, designed to tell a story, are found in homes, businesses, museums, and art galleries throughout the United States. Each child will create a shadow box that tells the story of his or her family.
