No gear, no problem for Team USA

CEDAR RAPIDS — It sure wasn’t a gold-medal start for Mark Carlson and the four Cedar Rapids RoughRiders players who were part of a United States team that won the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge international hockey tournament in Prince Edward Island, Canada, last week. Carlson, the RoughRiders head coach and general manager, led the U.S. to first place at the 2008 Challenge and figured the best way to do things this time around was to arrive at the tournament site (Summerside, ...

RoughRiders’ Hemingway is no writer

RoughRiders' Hemingway is no writer

It’s true. Matt Hemingway is related to that famous writer who shares his last name. Granted, Ernest Hemingway was the second cousin of his great-grandfather. But, hey, that counts. “I think my family and about four other people are the only ones that know that,” Hemingway said with a smile. “I’ve read ‘Old Man and The Sea,’ but that’s it. I don’t really like to write. Nothing like that.” The truth is the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders rookie could write a good book about ...

High school RoughRiders ready to ride high

CEDAR RAPIDS – He was cool with being interviewed and videotaped, but Matt Larson had a request first. “Hey, can I go change into our new uniform?” the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders captain asked. No, not those RoughRiders. These are the high school RoughRiders, who begin their Midwest High School Hockey League season this weekend with a home game Friday against Dubuque and Saturday and Sunday at Quad Cities. RoughRiders beat Team USA, 7-2

He claims he’s not really a point getter. The statistics say otherwise. Bryce Aneloski continued his torrid early season offensive play last night, recording a power-play hat trick and five points in the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders’ 7-2 win over the U.S. National 17-Under Team at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. A third-year guy, Aneloski already has as many points (12) and twice as many goals (6) as he did all last season in 38 games. The 19-year-old from Pekin, Ill., played one ...

Roughrider's Bryce Aneloski an offensive surpise

You expected Jeff Costello. You didn’t see Bryce Aneloski coming. Costello leads the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in scoring through the first three weekends of the United States Hockey League season. That’s no surprise, considering his talent (an Ottawa Senators draft pick) and 24 goals last year. What is a surprise is Aneloski being right behind him. The third-year defenseman has three goals and five assists in six games. For comparison, the 19-year-old from Pekin, Ill., had 12 points in 38 games last season. “I ...

Kovacs’ debut sparks RoughRiders

Justin Kovacs was itching. He was tired of scratching. The first-year Cedar Rapids RoughRiders center spent his first five games out of the lineup, but made his debut Sunday and all but assured himself future ice time. Kovacs had a goal as part of a dangerous forward line with fellow rookies Stu Wilson and Nick Lappin that helped the Riders blast the Des Moines Buccaneers, 5-0, before 1,387 fans at The Stable. Young RoughRiders break the ice at local high schools

Chicks dig hockey players. A postgame meet and greet at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena proves it. RoughRiders players are like rock stars in a way, attracting girls like Rush Limbaugh attracts conservative Republicans. “The football players don’t like us too much, though,” says Jeff Costello, laughing. Costello, 18, of Milwaukee, is in his second season with the Riders. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School this past summer. That’s part of the deal for junior hockey players. These 16-to-20-year-olds move away from ...

Caught up with new Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' radio play-by-play man Jim Stachoviak yesterday. He's a 28-year-old University of Iowa employee who won the team's open tryout last month. Here's a short story on him:                                                 CEDAR RAPIDS — Yeah, he’s heard Brian Lavelle’s name thrown around in his presence. "A couple of times," Jim Stachowiak said, laughing. "Sounds like I’ve got big shoes to fill."
