Iowa's Lickliter: Team has 'turned the corner'

IOWA CITY — The negatives swirl around the Iowa men’s basketball program like sharks swimming near a shipwreck. The Hawkeyes (0-2) opened with a pair of losses for the first time since 1970. If Iowa falls tonight at home against Bowling Green (1-1), it’s the first time since 1919 the team has dropped its first three games. Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter understands the concern surrounding his program. He’s just not ready to give up on the team after only two games. “When you’re ...

Iowa basketball fan wants to give away his season tickets

An Iowa resident wants to give away Hawkeye men's basketball season tickets. In fact, the person is offering to pay someone to take them. It's not clear exactly why the offer is being made. KCJJ Radio's Loren Keller called attention to a classified ad in today's Iowa City Press-Citizen, offering the tickets. Here's the full text of the ad: "Not Wanted-Can't Sell-Can't Give Away: 2 IA Mens Bsktball Season Tickets. Too close to the court, too far from popcorn. I'll pay you to ...

Iowa players see progress despite loss

The mood was lighter among Iowa's younger players following Tuesday's 52-50 loss to Duquesne. It wasn't that they were pleased with the outcome. Quite the contrary, they were visibly angry about it. But the effort was there, which will help them recover for Friday's game against Bowling Green." "We came in and want to win all the hustle plays," Iowa freshman Brennan Cougill said. "And we won most of them, taking charges, going after loose balls.  Just stuff it doesn't take talent, ...

Bluder seeing a lot of injuries this year

Coach long enough, and you see it all. What Lisa Bluder is seeing in her 26th year is injuries. Lots of them. And it’s only November. “We’ve got three of them I’ve never experienced before,” Bluder said as the University of Iowa women prepare for tonight’s basketball game against No. 19 Kansas. JoAnn Hamlin, the Hawkeyes’ lone senior, remains hospitalized with a blood clot in her leg, a condition that most likely will end her career. Bluder was hopeful Hamlin would be out ...

Lickliter frustrated with defense

Lickliter frustrated with defense

Todd Lickliter has preached defense in his three seasons as Iowa’s men’s basketball coach. It’s only natural that he’d find more aggravation with that side of the court when discussing the team’s 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio on Sunday. With Iowa (0-1) trailing by two points early in the second half, Hawkeyes point guard Cully Payne was in position to take a charge against the Roadrunners’ Morris Smith IV. Instead Payne was whistled for a blocking foul — his third of ...

Video: Iowa men drop first home opener in 47 years

Iowa's men's basketball team dropped its first home opener in 47 years Sunday night in a 62-50 loss to Texas-San Antonio. Iowa hadn't lost a home opener since 1962, and it was the first season-opening loss for Iowa in 32 years. Iowa's last season-opening defeat was in 1978. Freshmen Eric May and Cully Payne led Iowa's scoring attack. May, a guard/forward from Dubuque, scored 13 points, while Payne, the team's point guard, added 12. Iowa trailed for much of the game and fell behind by ...

Barnes picks North Carolina

Posted on Nov 13, 2009 by Nick Pugliese.

By Eric Peterson Correspondent AMES -- The guessing games are over. Harrison Barnes will play college basketball at North Carolina, the nation's No. 1 recruit told an Ames High School gymnasium crowd bursting at the seams to hear the star player's decision.  The 6-7, 195-pound Barnes ended months of speculation in choosing the Tar Heels, who are the defending national champions. Placards with the logos of each his six finalists -- UNC, Duke, Iowa State, Oklahoma, UCLA and Kansas -- were set in front of him. Barnes spoke for a few minutes ...

Hawks’ Cole found leadership taxing last year while rehabbing

Iowa center Jarryd Cole knows about the trials of leadership. While recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee, Cole was named a team captain last season. His ability was limited, and he couldn’t lead by example in practice or in games. It was difficult for the soft-spoken junior from North Kansas City, Mo., who doesn’t often make his point vocally. “It wasn’t all about me,” Cole said. “I had to be there for the team. Be there for the University ...

Lickliter thrilled with recruiting class

Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter can finally talk about next year’s four recruits and utter their names among a group of reporters. Cody Larson, a 6-foot-9 forward from Sioux Falls, S.D., 6-2 guard Ben Brust (Mundelein, Ill.), 6-7 forward Zach McCabe (Sioux City Heelan) and 6-5 guard Devyn Marble (Detroit) signed national letters of intent Wednesday. After months — or in the case of Larson, years — of speaking vaguely about a good recruiting class, Lickliter can heap praise on the 2010 ...

Hamlin’s career may be over

The Iowa women's basketball team  has suffered two losses -- and the regular season hasn't even started. Senior center JoAnn Hamlin has been hospitalized with a blood clot in her lower right leg. While she's been ruled out indefinitely, it also could be career-threatening. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Hannah Draxten will miss at least a week with a bulging disc in her back. Those injuries will force Coach Lisa Bluder to start two freshmen for this weekend's KCRG TV-9 Hawkeye Challenge -- Linn-Mar's Jaime Printy ...

Vandenberg, then Wienke and then don’t ask

Unless you’re in the mood for a giant helping of sarcasm, don’t even ask Kirk Ferentz about quarterback No. 3. Tuesday, it sounded as though the Iowa coach didn’t know. “I don’t think we have one right now,” Ferentz said. “Wyatt Suess (walk-on freshman from Cedar Rapids Washington), Marvin McNutt (former quarterback who’s now averaging 23.8 yards a catch as a wide receiver this season). Maybe we’ll put the wildcat in.” They won’t put the wildcat in. The No. 15 Hawkeyes (9-1, 5-1 Big ...

Fuller bulks up, and the rebounds come down

Aaron Fuller’s got game, and everybody could see that last year. Iowa’s sophomore forward scored 16 points last year in a road loss at Penn State. He showed a good left-handed shot from the perimeter and solid post moves as well. But Fuller, who stands 6-foot-6, often was missing from stretches of games and was overpowered by many of the Big Ten’s top posts. Gaining strength was an off-season priority, and 10 pounds later, it shows. “I’m just trying to get more consistent,” ...

Freshman replaces injured senior Hamlin in Hawkeye lineup

IOWA CITY — Iowa freshman Morgan Johnson came to the school with great hype because of her 6-foot-5 frame. She didn’t disappoint Sunday afternoon. Johnson, who replaced an injured JoAnn Hamlin, scored eight points and blocked six shots in the Hawkeyes’ 88-60 exhibition win against Division II Washburn at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Johnson didn’t know she was starting until Friday so she had to calm her nerves before the game. “My teammates, the great teammates that they are, they kind of picked me ...

Fuller, Tucker impressive

IOWA CITY — Iowa unveiled its new-look men’s basketball team Sunday seeking signs of improvement and cohesiveness. There were plenty of positives in the Hawkeyes’ 76-53 exhibition win over NAIA Marian (Ind.) University at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa also had tape of its deficiencies one week before its first game. As for the positives, bulked-up sophomore Aaron Fuller pulled down 15 rebounds, including 12 defensively. He scored seven points and played 22 minutes. Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter wondered in his postgame news conference ...

Hawkeyes taking their lumps at point position

The thinnest position on Iowa’s men’s basketball team has become the most vulnerable to injury. Guards Cully Payne and Anthony Tucker have missed recent practices because of injuries, although both figure to play in Sunday’s exhibition game against Marian (Ind.) University. Payne, a freshman point guard, rolled an ankle last Saturday during a team scrimmage and sat out practice Sunday. Tucker, a sophomore who will split time at the point and off-guard positions, sprained a back muscle the second day of practice. ...

Construction underway at Carver-Hawkeye Arena

The University of Iowa has started its $47 million reconstruction to Carver-Hawkeye Arena with neither pomp nor circumstance. Iowa Associate Athletics Director Rick Klatt said the economic recession convinced school officials to start modest construction rather than provide a ceremonial beginning to a two-year project.  "It's happening, people are excited, we feel good that we're kind of on schedule," Klatt said. "Nothing has changed, we always talked about starting it this fall. Sure enough here we are, and off we go." Last week, athletics ...
