One year later, Metrodome bathroom sex incident continues to haunt Iowa man, woman

This is from the St. Paul Pioneer Press: One year ago, Lois Feldman and Ross Walsh were hauled out of a handicapped toilet stall at the Metrodome, "upset," "drunk" and "uncooperative," according to a police report, their coitus interrupted by security officers. Ferentz not ready to contemplate quarterback competition

Yes, freshman quarterback James Vandenberg earned some renown with his performance at Ohio State. He completed 20 of 33 for 233 yards and two touchdowns. But he also had three interceptions, with a penalty and a miracle deflection saving another two. He also took a 10-yard sack on third-and-16 in overtime. Vandenberg stepped in for injured junior Ricky Stanzi and made his first career start in front of 105,000 hostile fans with a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl on the line. No, ...

BCS game or not, what a year for Hawks

Posted on Nov 20, 2009 by Mike Hlas.

I’ve witnessed a few of these University of Iowa football seasons now, and this has easily been my favorite year. Big Ten title? Nope. Rose Bowl? Uh uh. It might even end in a non-BCS bowl against an undistinguished also-ran from the SEC. But no Iowa season has been like this one. I’d bet few schools have ever known a year like Iowa’s. After Iowa defeated Indiana, 42-24, for the last of its nine straight wins to start the season, Kirk Ferentz said ...

Hawkeyes vs. Gophers: Game analysis

When the Hawkeyes have the ball The Gophers appear to have more speed on defense than in past seasons and linebackers Nate Triplett (6-3, 247) and Lee Campbell (6-3, 246), playing behind a bruiser line, are active and disruptive. Campbell leads the team in tackles (106) and tackles for loss (9.0) with five pass breakups. He also leads the Big Ten in solo tackles. Triplett has two interceptions and returned a fumble 52 yards for a touchdown in the victory over ...

Iowa linebacker mixes humor with the hits

The dog’s name is “Cash,” as in “Johnny Cash.” Cash is an English bulldog and he’s Pat Angerer’s best friend. We got to know Cash, owned by one of Angerer’s three brothers, after the Iowa linebacker tore ligaments in his right thumb earlier this season. Cash does just fine without thumbs, so ... “You don’t need thumbs,” he said. “My best friend is my brother’s dog. He doesn’t have any thumbs and he’s doing fine.” Angerer has made nearly every media opportunity this ...

Hawkeye recruit Derby

IOWA CITY — Matt Tvedte couldn’t wait. Another practice was complete and it was time to strap on the old feed bag. This wasn’t just another meal for the Iowa City High senior. This was Wednesday night supper, an event. “Don’t know what we’re having, yet,” Tvedte said. “I’m hoping cheesy bread, cheesy potatoes and either lasagna or baked chicken.” Every Wednesday during the football season, City High’s starting offensive linemen congregate at A.J. Derby’s home in Coralville to hang out, pig out ...

Hawkeye football in December?

Hawkeye football in December?

Like a Thanksgiving Day turkey, the Big Ten’s annual tradition of ending its football season before the November holiday is, well, cooked. Beginning next fall, the Big Ten adds a permanent no-game week to its league schedule. That stretches the eight-game league slate over nine weeks to end the fourth Saturday in November. Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz liked the status quo of completing the league season before Thanksgiving but now that his team must play after the holiday, he’d rather extend ...

Fans, Facebook and frustration

Trey Stross dropped three passes Saturday, including a possible TD. Monday, he dropped the invisible wall between athlete and fan. Two days after the Hawkeyes’ 27-24 overtime loss at Ohio State, the senior wide receiver from Avon Lake, Ohio, apologized to fans through his Facebook.com account. He also alluded to some harsh e-mails he received. “Trey Stross on the best team in the nation, w/the best fan base, thanx for all the support every1, after 30+ games I had the worst game ...

Video: Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, OT Bryan Bulaga talk about end-of-game decisions

Posted on Nov 17, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.

With the game tied 24-24, the ball at its 33 and 52 seconds left at Ohio State, Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz chose to play for overtime rather than try to win the game in regulation. He's caught flak nationally and locally for the decision, but Ferentz still sticks with his original thought process. Here's how Ferentz and tackle Bryan Bulaga describe the decision to play for overtime.

Bowl projections rund drei: Two wins and it's Christmas in Arizona for Iowa (and Iowa State)

A pair of wins this weekend by the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones could vault both into Arizona bowl games later this year. Iowa appears to be a solid choice by the Fiesta Bowl (Jan.4)  if it can beat the Gophers on Saturday. At 10-2 and a likely spot in the BCS top 12, Iowa is an attractive team for any bowl, especially one in Arizona. Iowa fans are known to travel in droves for bowl games (more than ...

It was a terrific loss

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The responses Iowa’s football players got as they made their way out of their Ohio Stadium locker room to their team buses last night were cheers and hugs. Sure, the welcoming committee consisted almost entirely of family members and close friends. But they surely represented the hearts and minds of most Hawkeye fans. No, Iowa didn’t get out of the vaunted Horseshoe with a win in the winner-take-all game for the Big Ten’s berth in the Rose Bowl. Ohio ...

Video: Roses, fans and bands outside Ohio Stadium

Outside Ohio Stadium this morning I ran into fans with champagne and roses in case Iowa pulls off the upset and wins the Big Ten championship. Some of the Iowa fans flew from Alabama, Mississippi, Cedar Rapids and St. Louis. Others drove from Iowa City and Cleveland. With the temperature hovering near 60 degrees, few clouds and a lot of sun, it looks like a great day for football. I also took a peak at the Ohio State Marching Band, widely considered the ...

Recalling the dark scene surrounding last win at Ohio State

Recalling the dark scene surrounding last win at Ohio State

This story was published in 2006 on the 15th anniversary of Iowa's last win at Ohio State: On Nov. 1, 1991, Gang Lu, a 28-year-old disgruntled doctoral student, went on a murderous rampage in Iowa City, killing six people, including himself. That day, Iowa's football team flew to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State. Players were transfixed on hotel televisions after their arrival. At their home school, their home campus, their home city, they saw a scene that failed to resonate. Not ...
