Why should we care? Unregs don't need to take ANY trainings to care for our kids nor do they normally take any safety classes, and they can't participate in the CACFP meals program. Is the Gazette suggesting that a registered, trained child care provider is the same as someone who just decides to let the kids watch TV all day and/or offers no learning opportunities? "Monticello City Administrator Doug Herman said there is still public support for the day care project, but some supporters are now reluctant to speak out because they don’t want to get on the bad side of day care providers they and their children depend upon." --. Oh Doug. This just made me chuckle. Really? Child care providers are now bad scary people? Guess we know now what you think of people who disagree with you. If the community is THAT dependent on child care providers, doesn't that mean the providers are correct that the new center isn't needed? Maybe they need more community, I mean administrator support. In my area we've seen 4 Centers close in the last 2 years and I'd say that a recession is really the wrong time to open one and try to charge $135 per child or more. Most parents I enroll say they can't afford Centers. So, who is the clientèle you wish to obtain with the new Center? Have you done enough homework? Single parents? No. Dual income families? Maybe, if they are upper middle class. Why don't the sponsors of this Center tour the homes of the child care providers. What you find might surprise you. Children playing and learning in a multi-age group environment. Encourage your community to choose registered child care providers. By 2012 they might not {hopefully!} have an unregistered choice.
