Thanksgiving school break varies across Eastern Iowa

This time of year, it’s great to be a student in the Cedar Rapids school district.
Cedar Rapids students take the whole week off for Thanksgiving break.
Thanksgiving break for students from College Community, Iowa City, Linn-Mar and Marion begins Wednesday, although Marion students have an early recess time on Tuesday.
“It is very typical that the Cedar Rapids school district has a full week off for Thanksgiving,” said Laurel Day, the district’s assistant to the superintendent and calendar committee chairwoman.
Winter break tells a different story.
Iowa City schools, which follow the University of Iowa vacation calendar, have two full weeks of vacation beginning Dec. 21. School resumes Jan. 4.
The Cedar Rapids district’s winter break begins Dec. 23. The students return to class Jan. 4.
College Community and Marion students have the same winter break schedule as Cedar Rapids.
Linn-Mar elementary and middle school students begin winter break Dec. 23 and return to school Jan. 4.
Linn-Mar High School students have Dec. 24 through Jan. 4 off for winter break. They return to school Jan. 5.
Here's an idea, instead of a week off let them out on Wed. and move the extra days to later in the year so we have more potential snow make up days and that way the kids don't need to go till almost July. Also how about cutting back on these ridiculous teacher inservice days! They have a whole summer to get those completed.
Why does Linn Mar have differesnt dates for the high school? That seems really stupid to make the older kids go an extra day.
I agree there are too many in-service days. But you have to leave the teacher's summers alone. They are barely getting paid enough to make it through the school year and most of them are also taking classes and have families. Their summers are a well deserved break. My son's kindergarten teacher spends 9+ hours a day at school (kindergarten!) and I know a HS teacher who arrives at 7 and is lucky to leave by 5. And school lets out at 2:45.
