Whirlpool announces 33 layoffs at Amana
Posted on Nov 20, 2009 by Admin.
Whirlpool Corp. has laid off 33 more workers at its Middle Amana refrigerator plant.
The company notified the affected employees of the layoffs Friday. They take effect Wednesday of next week.
Calls to Whirlpool corporate officials were not immediately returned. The layoff was confirmed by Machinists Local 831, which represents employees at the plant.
Joe Ironside, directing business representative for the Machinists, said the workers were laid off because the company is revamping a production line.
Affected employees were allowed to take home the turkeys they would have received next week had they not been laid off. The turkeys are a holiday gift the company has distributed in previous years.
Layoffs have cut deeply into employment at the Middle Amana plant. Refrigerator demand has been slowed by the economic recession, particularly the slowdown in housing construction and remodeling.

Sorry we have to lay you off, but here's a turkey to make everything better…
Such poor taste. I can guarantee that no fowl will taste fouler than this.
I find it in poor taste that they had to put that statement in the paper also. Spare me please. We are such a great company to work for….we give you a turkey- Here ya go as you're being escorted to the door, at least your family won't starve for a couple days.
