Posted on Oct 30, 2009 by Trish Mehaffey.
Two Chicago were convicted by jury in U.S. District Court Thursday for an extensive check fraud scheme involving $30,000 to $70,000.
Kendrick Butler, 23, was found guilty of six counts of bank fraud and not guilty of one count of bank fraud. Darrell Sanders, 38, was found guilty of three counts of bank fraud after pleading guilty the second day of the three day trial.
The trial evidence showed Butler recruited local people to cash the fraudulent checks at banks and credit unions in and around Cedar Rapids. Butler receive a portion of the money from the scam.
Sanders admitted to making checks for the scheme, providing them to local people to cash and receiving a portion of the money after they were cashed.
Butler faces up to 180 years in federal prison for six counts and a $6 million fine. Sanders faces up to 90 years in prison for three counts and $3 million fine.
Four other people also pleaded guilty in the same scheme.

Play with someone else's money, and the penalty is HUGE. Take someone else's life, and the penalty is not going to be 180 years and a 6 million dollar fine. At least we can now definitively say which is more important when it comes to federal criminal legislation. Well, for the common man, any way. If you steal an entire country's financial future, you get a federal bail-out AND multi-million dollar bonuses. I guess it's true, you can steal more with a briefcase than a gun. Only now you get the Fed's to pay you to do it!

I wonder if these criminals ever commit crimes in the state east of Illinois ?
I have seen numerous criminal activity to be committed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and it's tiresome !
I should have studied law in college rather than what I did.
I would march around cleaning the streets with those fine officers there.
I am glad they exist !
Thank You CRPD and the court system for keeping our streets safe.
