UPDATE: A three-car accident on the southwest edge of town sent two drivers to the hospital Wednesday night.

Just before 5 p.m., a southbound car driven by Thomas L. Shurtz, 16, of Shellsburg, was broadsided by an eastbound van driven by Kimberly J. Kankelfitz, 44, of Atkins, at the intersection of 80th Street and 16th Avenue SW, according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. The collision pushed the Shurtz car into another car, driven by Kari A. Kibby, of Cedar Rapids, which was stopped on 80th Street.

Shurtz and Kankelfitz were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Kibby was not injured.

Authorities said that the van and the car were traveling below highway speeds at the time of the accident, but that the incident is still under investigation. Charges are pending.

"Linn County Sheriff’s deputies couldn’t say the names or ages of the two drivers"

Any reason for this? It should be public information. Seems fishy to me they wouldn't release that info.

Maybe the deputy couldn't pronounce the names? From the way the article reads that is the way it sounds. Maybe a better way to state this would be that the sheriff's office could not release the names of the drivers.

Perhaps the families of the crash victims hadn't been notified yet.
