Iowa Hunting Accidents
Iowa hunters have had experience had some of their safest years in recent years. Hunter education classes and an accident investigation program incorporated into hunter training have contributed to the dramatic improvement in safety since the 1960s.
There has been one hunting-related gunshot fatality in Iowa since 2004 – a significant change from the 66 who were killed during a four year period between 1964 and 1967.
Shooting at running targets and failing to identify what’s beyond a target continue to be significant factors in accidents.
This database includes more than 190 hunting incidents recorded by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources between 2000 and 2006.
Information in the database comes from Iowa Hunting Incident Reports from 2000 to 2006.

Information from accidents which have occurred in 2007 will become available in early 2008 and will be added to the database at that time.
