There are 627 Iowa taxpayers who have failed to collect almost $439,000 in federal tax refunds in the past year from the Internal Revenue Service. The income tax refund checks were returned to the IRS as undeliverable.
There are 78 people from Linn and Johnson counties on the list, with checks totaling about $33,224. The average refund is around $413, IRS officials said.
Undeliverable refunds make up less than one-tenth of one percent of all refunds. In 2007, the IRS processed nearly 105 million refunds totaling $240 billion, officials said.
The average check size is $700, officials said. Checks can be reissued as soon as taxpayers correct or update information with the IRS.
Search the list by name, city, county or state to see if your name is on the list. Federal law didn’t allow the IRS to tell the amount of the unclaimed refund.
In order to update your information and get the check, go to www.irs.gov and click on the “Where’s my Refund” link. An automated telephone version of “Where’s My Refund?” by calling (800) 829-1954. You’ll need your social security number, filing status and the amount of refund shown on your 2006 return to get into the IRS system.
