If going, Iowa required to sell more than 25,000 tickets for Rose Bowl

Posted on Oct 26, 2009 by Scott Dochterman.

rose1The Big Ten Conference school competing in the Rose Bowl is responsible for selling at least 25,138 tickets to that game, according to figures supplied by the league to the University of Iowa.

But those numbers are applicable only if the Big Ten school – usually the league champion – plays its traditional Pac-10 Conference rival in the game, which is held Jan. 1, 2010 in Pasadena, Calif. If the Big Ten school plays a school from another league or an independent, the Big Ten school is required to sell 34,346 tickets.

If the school doesn’t sell their allotment, it would incur the cost of those tickets, which are $145 each.

Iowa leads the the Big Ten with an 8-0 overall record and is 4-0 in the league. The Hawkeyes will gain at least a tie for the league title with three more wins this year. Iowa has not played in the Rose Bowl since Jan. 1, 1991.

However, if the Big Ten champion competes in the BCS National Championship Game, it would be required to sell only 16,000 tickets. The title game also is held in Pasadena, Calif., but on Jan. 7, 2010.

Should a Big Ten school qualify for a different BCS bowl game – Fiesta (Phoenix), Orange (Miami), Sugar (New Orleans) – the school is required to sell 17,500 tickets.

As for the league’s other bowls, here’s the required ticket allotments:

  • Capital One: 12,000
  • Outback: 11,000
  • Alamo: 10,833
  • Champs: 12,000
  • Insight: 10,500
  • Motor City: No minimum

Iowa’s athletics ticket office sold more than 13,000 tickets for the Jan. 1, 2009 Outback Bowl but requested 15,000 and lost $150,000 because of it. Iowa had sold more than 20,000 tickets for the 2006 Outback Bowl and school officials estimate the same number attended the 2009 game but bought their tickets through the bowl, rather than the school.

Hey Scott, interesting story and well researched. Thanks for that. I wondered if you might do a follow-up giving some idea of how many tickets Iowa would anticipate selling if it's the Rose Bowl, and some info on ticket brokers, like StubHub, gotickets.com, etc., in terms of the price ranges for Rose Bowl tickets now and, if Iowa gets in, whether ticket prices will tend to go up or down. I'm overseas and don't have season tickets, although I always go back to the LA area for the holidays, so I'm there if the Hawks are in Pasadena, but I'm not sure when or where to get the best deal on Rose Bowl tickets.
