If Iowa wins out, should they play for a title?

Posted on Nov 02, 2009 by admin.

345px-iowa_hawkeyes_logoWith every win from the unpredictable Iowa Hawkeyes, speculation grows about the possibility of an undefeated Hawkeye squad.

But Iowa’s not the only unbeaten team in the land. Traditional football powers Florida, Texas and Alabama are all 8-0 and ranked above the Hawkeyes in all major polls, including the all-important BCS rankings. Cincinnati, Boise State and TCU also remain unbeaten, and all are ranked ahead of Iowa in the AP poll, though the Hawkeyes own the edge over all three in the BCS rankings. Here’s a quick look at all the polls.

Confused yet? Columnist Mike Hlas may have some answers for you: Get a handle on Northwestern here

Essentially, the Hawkeyes still aren’t impressing the national pundits and pollsters. But are you impressed enough to believe the Hawkeyes are a credible contender for a title game? Tell us here.

I know most of us are going to be homers here and vote yes on this question. I don't know if we'd be outclassed or not in a title game, but I think we deserve a shot (if we win out) and here's why. It's very simple to me…..We have a way tougher schedule than any of the other current unbeatens and most of the 1 or 2 loss teams. We may not have looked great getting to where we are but none the less, we are here and have fought a gruelling schedule to get here. That should be rewarded.

As of right now Iowa has a SOS, according to the NCAA, that is 18th in the country. Florida is # 7, Texas is 32, Orgeon is 13. That will change as the season goes on of course.

Most followers of the college game do not really think of the b-10 as a grueling schedule. Perhaps that will change in the years to come–but right now that is the situation.

I'm not going to cry if an undefeated Texas and Florida play for all the marbles and Iowa has to settle for the Rose Bowl. The Big 10 has made this bed…

If Iowa is one of five or so unbeaten teams it means a playoff format is needed. So this will be the biggest argument for it. Every unbeaten team in Division 1A and 1AA deserves a shot to prove itself and this can only be done in playoff. Otherwise it's a sham IMHO,.

imagine….. LSU beats bama, then florida loses to florida state and texas wins out and the hawks do too. It should be Iowa-Texas for the championship.

      Hey, hey!
No LSU beating Bama, lol! Roll Tide!
Would LOVE to see Florida lose to Florida State. Not gonna happen though. They are good!
If Alabama and Florida go head to head this year, Alabama needs to light a fire under their butt and not give up like last year!!!!
I will so be in Atlanta for this game! :)

LOL there are miracles and then there are MIRACLES!!!!!!!! And it would take a miracle of epic porportions!!!

Florida will not lose to anyone this year and especially not f$u at the swamp in final regular season game for Tim Tebow!!!! It will be an interesting culmination to the career of Bobby Bowden as well!

Bama will be a tougher game for UF but in the end we will once again be the champs of the SEC for the 8th time since the conference went to two divisions! For the record there have been 18 title games in the SEC and the Gators have 8 titles! Not bad LOL

LSU might beat Bama–but I doubt it. Bama is a good team. They do what championship caliber football teams do–find a way to win the game. And they will do until they meet the ultimate championship football team on Dec 5 in Atlanta!

BTW, the Gator clinch of the East Divsion last weekend ties the earliest clinching weekend in the history of the two divisions!

I love to watch the SEC because of all the action from the very beginning of the game. By the time Iowa got warmed up, they might be too many touchdowns behind or maybe if they were two touchdowns behind right away in the first quarter, they would show that fourth quarter enthusiasm and daring the first, second and third quarter and not wait until the fourth quarter to get going!

Going undefeated is just a small part of the equation. The poll question here, really isn't all that relevant, because the national championship game is set based on a standard criteria. Iowa could go undefeated and end up not making it in. I think Iowa is worthy of consideration and wouldn't embarrass the state if things worked out that we made it through the season undefeated and were considered strong enough to be amongst the top two. Having the 18th toughest schedule in the country is nothing to sneeze at. I'm not sure I'd say that Florida's was tougher than ours. Florida has played the likes of Charleston Southern, Troy, and will play a weak Vanderbilt team Saturday.
Three weeks remain in the regular season. If it is meant to be, it will be.

Florida and Alabama play in the SEC. We do not need a strong OOC schedule like other schools do that play in other conferences. Most SEC schools schedule one strong OOC team each year. Florida every few years plays Miami and always plays f$u–and that is usually a tough match. Not all years but most!

It really is no different that the Iowa schedule–no one really strong OOC–but a couple of possibly strong teams–Arizona and ISU. So those two sort of strongs equal one strong.

It is hard to figure who is going to be strong 7-10 years out when most of the contracts are developed. A team that may have been good is no longer and vica versa. That is the game of football!

Iowa has also had a few week teams–Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana with Northwestern and Minnesota to come. You can not pick your conference opponents–you just have to live with what you get!

Florida is not going to lose to Fl State, but Bama or Florida are going to have at least one loss….because they play each other. So I think it will probably the winner of FL-Bama against Texas for all the marbles. But, you never know, Iowa just has to win out to stay in the hunt.

I agree with those who will be very HAPPY with a Rose Bowl bid and a WIN! We can get into the national title game next year and see how that goes. This year we just need to take care of business and go to the (real) Rose Bowl and WIN. One giant step at a time. Go Hawks, be fired up and ready to roll over the Mildcats!

I have been an Iowa fan my entire life. I have also been an Alabama season ticket holder for 10 years-one of my sons went there to school. I have also watched every single minute of both teams this year. Don't flame me here since I love the Hawks, but Alabama is better. The teams area actually similier-great "D" and poor "O". There is no way Iowa moves the ball on Alabama-they have the fastest defense I have ever seen and probably have 5 NFL players on defense. They also have a fantastic punt returner (Arenas) and great kicker. They also don't turn it over. Bama wins this game by 10 points at least. I hope I get to see it!

My guess is that matchup won't happen. Alabama will be in the Sugar and Iowa in the Rose. I would guess more like 14-21 point advantage for Bama.

With the Big 10's bad reputation and the fact that the Hawks are just getting by but not dominating their opponents, the chance of a national title game for them is very small indeed. But I'll take the Rose Bowl! Maybe next year for all the marbles.
